In the professional setting of counsellors, social workers, psychologist, youth workers and pastors there seems to be a focus on equipping professionals to either work therapeutically with adults or with young children. But what about that in-between age group!? In our practice alone, we have seen a major increase in requests for counselling for teenagers.
Substance use disorder (SUD) or addiction is often seen as a disorder or illness that reoccurs and fills many people with a sense of shame and hopelessness. This conversation gives a broad overview of what addiction is, how it is experienced by the person who is addicted and the difficulty experienced in stopping. The importance of thorough assessment and the role of the counsellor is unpacked and applied to a case study. The conversation is rounded of by unpacking what relapse is, how we prevent it and how to achieve sustained recovery.
