So many people are stuck with a degree or an honours; not knowing where to go from there. On the other hand, many are not accepted for honours or masters, especially not the first time around. Working with children is a specialized field that requires that counsellors and therapist not only have a sound theoretical understanding of the child and the impact of different life-events and or trauma on the child, but also that they have a variety of therapeutic tools and modalities available to them to meet the needs of the individual child client they are working with. Most training courses in the field of play-based interventions available in South Africa often only focus on one therapeutic modality or only consists of short training programmes that focus on one therapeutic intervention leaving counsellors and social workers feeling ill equipped to deal with the vast range of different referrals they receive.

With this training course, developed by Dr Louise Aucamp and Anschel Pieterson amongst others, we aim to provide delegates not only an in-depth theoretical knowledge base and practical hands-on skills, a structured guideline to the play therapy process, play-based therapeutic tools and techniques as well as a vast range of different life-events, traumas, and behavioural concerns that children might present with. Delegates have an opportunity to gain not only knowledge and skill but apply these in practice as this programme consist of theoretical component, practical component, as well as supervision and practice guidance over a 6-month period.

Research is showing us the incredible changes that are taking place and why teenagers are almost unrecognisable to their loved ones. Almost all aspects of their lives are affected, from sleeping, to how they relate to their friends and the world. In order to understand teenagers, you need to understand the changes and the implications thereof. This one-day workshop will deal with with both aspects; understanding teenagers as well as working with them. It is designed for people dealing with teenagers like teachers and social workers.

In the professional setting of counsellors, social workers, psychologist, youth workers and pastors there seems to be a focus on equipping professionals to either work therapeutically with adults or with young children. But what about that in-between age group!? In our practice alone, we have seen a major increase in requests for counselling for teenagers.

In this 1 day course, presented by Anschel Pieterson, social worker in private practice, and Alicia Coertze, specialist wellness counsellor with special focus on teens, various aspects with regards to working therapeutically with teenagers will be discussed and practical implementation thereof will be outlined.

Working with an adult survivor of childhood sexual abuse can be daunting.  Sexual abuse can affect every aspect of the adult’s life; self-esteem, relationships, parenting, sexuality and the relationship with Self.  Survivors find themselves behaving in ways that they don’t understand.  Irrational thinking, cognitive distortions and symptoms of complex trauma are all too common.

The aim of the workshop is to help the therapist (and client) understand what the survivor is experiencing, why they behave the way they do and how to integrate the experience by walking a journey of healing.
