GILL SHUTTLEWORTH – HUMANITAS COUNSELLING STUDENT

Gill volunteers her time by offering free online counselling via Skype.

For as long as I can remember I have had a passion for understanding people on a deeper level. I have always held a fascination for observing people and have had an innate sense of compassion for people who are being faced with personal challenges or struggles. My deepest desire is for people to see their value and their vast potential. My goal is to provide a safe space for people to be able to talk and work through the challenges they are facing and the things that are holding them back from reaching  a place of personal peace and a place where they can live a more fulfilled and purposeful life.

After completing my degree in Psychology at the Pietermaritzburg campus of the University of KwaZulu Natal, I changed paths and completed all the relevant examinations for registration with The Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators. My early work experience was in human resources. I later was involved in the setting up and running of my husband’s business where I ran all the financial and administrative aspects as well as co-ordinated our companies annual conference for 250-300 people. Through this I have gained a strong understanding of the challenge’s small businesses face and the challenges faced when working from a home based office. My passion for psychology and working with people remained with me and after much soul searching, I decided to start studying again. In 2018 I was certified as a neuro-coach practitioner and in 2019 I registered for my Honours in Psychology and completed my first four modules. I am currently completing my last four modules. I have also recently completed the theoretical and practical portion of Vita Nova Humanitas Counselling and I am currently doing my internship hours.

My life has been anything but routine and as a result I understand various aspects of life and the challenges that come with the different stages of life. Life is in a constant state of change and some changes are easier to work through than others. I have lived in five different towns in four different provinces. I understand the challenges of change as well as the challenges of living in both a city and a small rural town. After 28 years of marriage I understand the challenges faced both individually and as a couple and what it takes to make your marriage work.

I have a passion for teenagers and young adults and for parents navigating their way through the different challenges their children are facing. I have navigated both myself and my children through their teenage years, the pressures of their matric year, career choices and on to university and my own personal adaption to my empty nest. I was involved in children’s ministry for 10 years.

I have both seen and experienced the power of what counselling and coaching can do for a person within a short space of time. I have learned that the things that I have not wanted to face have been what have ultimately held me back and robbed me of both my energy and my joy. I have found that there is power in looking within yourself and allowing yourself to feel what you need to feel without any self- judgement. The counselling space allows for self-reflection. The beauty of this space being that you are in the driver’s seat. You decide where you would like to travel. The power of being heard and being able to tell your story is empowering and life changing. It would be my privilege to walk you through this journey.
