ROELIEN WIESNER - VITA NOVA PIETERMARITZBURG

Roelien Wiesner

I completed my degree in Social work in 1989 at the University of the Free Sate celebrating my 30th year in a profession I am passionate about!

I have been privileged to have worked with individuals and families from all walks of life and have been able to help many children in need of care, hold hands with the severely traumatised and assist families in planning their futures. Throughout my career, I have shared joy and pain with people who have crossed my path.

The first seven years of my career, I worked for the Department of Social Development as a Statutory Social Worker, assisting families in crisis. Thereafter I started a branch of Childline in Pietermaritzburg, where I delivered therapeutic services to children affected by physical, sexual and emotional abuse.

In 2002, I joined the Office of the Family advocate as a Family Counselor, assisting families in the process of divorce.

I was fortunate enough to have also worked at a private school for girls as the school counselor, guiding them through their challenging teenage years.

Since 2009, I have been working closely with victims in the criminal justice field. I have experienced the deep realness of human grief, tragedy and loss with the most vulnerable. I have travelled the journey through the criminal justice system with them aiding in the transition from victim to survivor. I have stood next to them in court bearing witness to immense bravery as they tell their painful stories. To use a quote from Brene Brown: “I’ve changed. Irrevocably. Permanently. My soul is richer and my heart is fuller in brokenness than it ever was without. I’ve learnt true despair.”

I have done extensive training in stress and trauma, communication with children, the effect of sexual abuse on children, incest in the family, survivors of sexual abuse, developmental stages, vicarious trauma and self-care.

I have an after-hours private practice. I have found that many people and families in crises find it difficult to take time off work. Afterhours appointments are therefore ideal.

I specialise in the following:

  • Parenting
  • Dealing with stress and trauma
  • Marriage and relationship counselling
  • Post-divorce counselling
  • Children dealing with specific problems such as grief, anger, anxiety, depression and sexual confusion
  • Development of emotional intelligence in children
